Halfway Retreat is the studio’s earliest completed work, finished in 2017 on a twenty thousand square foot plot outside Nashik. Only eight hundred square feet of it is built. The restraint is the idea: the land does the work and the structure stays out of its way.

Because the built footprint is so small, siting mattered more than planning. The building was placed to catch the best of the open ground and to leave the rest of the plot uninterrupted, so that arriving at the house means crossing the landscape first.

The remaining land is held as open farm and planting rather than being carved into a garden, keeping the retreat closer to the fields around it than to a residential plot.
